Well, you can argue whether kits are strictly “home brew” or not, but the fact is they’re lots of fun, and the Elecraft kits are almost universally well regarded. For my two cents they’re excellent, and I very much enjoyed building my K1 and K2, plus many of the accessories.


They’re definitely not a low cost entry into amateur radio, you could probably buy a decent used low end rig on ebay for less, but I think you do get good value for money with the performance and features provided by this home assembled rig. While they’re not difficult, I wouldn’t recommend them to the first time builder. If you’ve got a tuna tin or a qrp club kit under your belt – go for it.
